Plastic bottle desktop Christmas tree with lights

Plastic bottle Christmas tree

this project is sure to spice up your dull desktop. It’s quick, simple, and it is a good way to recycle those old plastic bottles instead of throwing them away.

supplies:

  • plastic bottles (soda bottles with smooth sides works best. The amount depends on how tall or short you want your tree) be sure to leave all bottle caps on.
  • long skewer or kabob stick
  • green paint
  • mini ornaments
  • small string of LED lightss
  • Small round block of wood (or any wood for the basse
  • drill
  • Elmer’s or super glue
  • red patterned fabric (or fabric of your choice)
  • small star (foam or wood)
  • small nut, about the size of the inside top of the bottle, or bottle cap

instructions:

  1. Cut the bottoms off all the bottles. Remember, the amount depends on how tall or short you want your tree.
  2. cut in even straight lines around the entire bottle, until you get a fringed look.
  3. for each bottle you cut, cut off a small amount of the fringe, so as to start making the tree shape. As you finish each bottle, set it aside.
  4. 3. Use the green paint to paint your skewer and your base green if you wish. This is optional.
  5. drill a small hole in your block of wood using the drill. Make sure it’s not too big, or the skewer won’t stick in the next step.
  6. when your skewer and base are dry, put a small amount of glue into the hole you drilled earlier. Then put the skewer inside the hole, and wait for it to dry. If you are using super glue, you will need to do this right away, as super glue dries extremely fast.
  7. once the skewer is firmly in place and everything is dry, slide your nut or bottle cap onto the skewer, all the way down to the bottom where the skewer meets the wood. If using a bottle cap, make sure it has the threads facing up. Glue either your bottle cap or nut to the wood and let dry. This will allow you to screw the first bottle, the base of your tree, onto the bottom of the base.
  8. Cut a small round hole the size of the bottle cap or nut into your cloth. Place cloth over the wood, making sure that the mount for the Christmas tree is visible and open. Glue the cloth onto the wood, giving it a fringed or rippling look, if you wish.
  9. poke small holes in the center of all of the bottle caps with scissors. Slide each bottle onto the skewer, making sure that each one is centered.
